"Childhood Cancer Awareness Tree" The very first "Childhood Cancer Awareness Tree" was displayed the 2000 holiday season on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The tree was decorated only with gold ribbons which celebrated the lives of children with cancer, children who have successfully battled cancer, and sadly, children who have died as a result of this dreadful disease. I made certain that my granddaughter, Jordan, had a gold ribbon on the tree to honor her and her successful battle against cancer, and to celebrate her life. The tree lighting ceremony was held on December 15, 2000 at 5:00 P.M. In finding out about the "Childhood Cancer Awareness Tree", I met Kelsey Nicole Thorsen's Mother, Gigi Thorsen, who lives in Utah. Kelsey died in 1996 at the young age of 7, (same age that Jordan was diagnosed) from complications that developed after being diagnosed with leukemia. In Kelsey's memory, Gigi began the gold ribbon campaign with the gold ribbon lapel pin being the symbol of "Childhood Cancer Awareness". My "Helping Heart" volunteers will be offering the gold ribbons for a $5.00 donation or I can take your order by e-mail.
Here is a sample of the card that you will receive with
the gold ribbon pin:
Please take time to read the "Signs Of Childhood
Cancer". Recognizing these signs could save your child's life.
Jordan just turned 9 years old on December 7th. She has to be
checked every three months. Her most recent scan was a few weeks ago and
reported to be negative for cancer. How thankful we are!
